Mridanga Drum - Small - Tilak (20")


Introducing the Small version of the Tilak Mridanga! Like the big version, the Mridanga is made from hard wearing fiberglass and is built to last. On the body of each is the famous "Tilak" symbol that distinguishes the Vaishnava. This will help you or your child to remember the spiritual aspect of playing the Mridanga. Here's a demonstration of what the Tilak Drums can sound like (Big size drum is featured in the video):

Nakula Prabhu plays the new Tilak Mrdanga. This is the new fiberglass mrdanga based on the design of the original ISKCON "Balaram Mridanga" but the Tilak Mrdanga is now a much improved and more reasonably priced mrdanga.

Many Vaishnava children love to bang on the instruments in temple rooms and around the house. The Small Tilak Mridanga is a great first drum for kids because it is virtually indestructible and it is a good size for them to learn on.

The small Tilak Mridangas are still powerful enough to be a good drum for adults, too, especially for those who travel. Read more I am astounded with the amazing customer service and generosity. The shipping in India can be pretty rough and so when my mridanga package arrived in Puri India (shipped from the Philippines) it had a small crack in it. I wrote a message of complaint and immediately I got a response asking if I'd like to be reimbursed with cash or a free new mridanga. I chose a new mridanga and this time it shipped with no problem. They even paid the $50 shipping cost! The Mataji who I dealt with was very helpful and kind. I have never seen such good customer service elsewhere. The mridanga is very light. Both sides of the mridanga are very loud and sounds almost just like a real clay mridanga. This is especially essential for places which have humid climate (humidity loosens the leather make clay mridangas go completely flat) or places which have a very dry climate (dryness tightens the leather making the bass side of the mridanga very high pitch). Here in India during the summer time the mridanga would sound too high and in the winter time it would be too low to the point of even going totally flat. But this Tilak Mridanga has solved all these common mridanga problems. Oh and during Ratha-yatra time in Puri they shoot you with these huge water guns because it is so hot. All the clay mridanga players had to cover their mridangas with cloth and guard it but me and my Tilak mridanga were getting drenched with water with no problem and I could continue playing loud. How awesome is that? A water-proof mridanga whose sound stays the same throughout all weather conditions! It is super easy to tune as well with the little wrench that is so intelligently placed on the shoulder strap. Read less

The drum is nicely finished, and easy to adjust with an allen key in a little pocket on the strap. The lighter weight of the Tilak mridanga to the Balarama mridanga makes it easier to play (or practice) for long periods without feeling heavy on the shoulders. I think its lack of weight in the body causes it not to resonate as long as the Balarama drum - I'm not sure yet whether this can be rectified by experimenting with different materials on the heads (if anyone has improved the resonance please let us know how you did it). On the price side, the drum is very reasonably priced - well worth the money! Read less

I got a blue one, and the color is like a metallic blue, with little sparkles in it. Many years ago I used to have a blue Balarama mridanga, and I can tell you that this drum both looks and sounds better than the old Balarama ones. I am very happy with the drum. I also bought the instructional dvd and am just learning to play. It only took 3 days to arrive . For those who may not be aware of the drums arrival condition , they are out of tune and require you to remove protective rubber ring so to tighten the heads up. Drum comes with a tool on the strap to do so if you look or feel around on the strap .
